U Muntaghjò

The highest point of the village, the neighborhood developed around a castle built by the Montalti family and its descendants who ruled over the region from about the year one thousand to the end of the Middle Ages.

 

CARRUGHJU PETRONE MONTALTI 

(January 9, 1911, Oletta – September 19, 1996, Paris)

Petrone Montalti was a member of a powerful family that dominated the Nebbiu region around the year 1000.  The remains of a small, medieval fort are located on the highest part of the Romanacce hamlet.  Petrone Montalti’s family would later build the castle at Muntaghjo.

(Oletta ? – 1769)

Francesco Antonio Saliceti, a priest also known as « Peverino ».  Born in Oletta into an influential family, Father Francesco Antonio Saliceti carried out the duties of Patrimonio’s parish reverend.  He was given the nickname of Peverino (small pepper) because of his vivacious personality and his firm and determined commitments.  Pascal Paoli called on Father Saliceti and entrusted him with support missions during those war times.  One of his missions brought about one of the most tragic episodes in the history of the Corsican rebellions of the XVIII th century:  the Oletta Conspiracy.  He was killed in Oletta’s plains while going to combat in Barbaghju.

STRETTA DI U BELVEDERE:

This place has a magnificent viewpoint.  It looks over the village, church and the whole gulf.  “Belvedere” is naturally impressive.

 

STRADA DI U PRETE PERGOLA 

(24.06.1900 Venaco – 11.02.1985, Oletta)

Oletta’s parish priest from 1948 to 1985.  Seriously researched Nebbiu’s history.  Father Pergola Jean-Jacques began his function as Oletta’s parish priest on September 21, 1948.  His ministry has so far been the longest:  37 years.  Recognized for his knowledge and research on the region’s noteworthy families, he was born on June 24, 1900 in Venaco (Upper Corsica), passed away in Oletta (Upper Corsica) on February 11, 1985.  He is the son of Jules François Pergola and Jeanne Giacobbi.  Priest at the age of 22.
