CARRUGHJU RENE MASSIGLI

(09.03.1915, Oletta – 21.12.1946, Hanoi)

Rene Massigli and his wife were the owners of a vacation villa in the Cavallacce neighborhood from the 40’s to the 70’s.  They hosted many famous people such as the British Chancellor Thorneycraft, a politician or the writer Julien Green, Normalien.  An associate professor of history who attended the French School in Rome, Rene Massigli became part of the Department of Foreign Affairs in 1919.  He became head of the French Service of the Society of Nations about ten years later, was named assistant director of commercial and political affairs in the Department of Foreign Affairs in 1933, then director in 1937.  At the beginning of 1943, ,General de Gaulle, who had solicited him to take over the functions of Commissioner of Foreign Affairs in independent France, had him leave the metropolis.  He remained at this job until September 1944 when he chose to take over the function of ambassador again.  In this way, Rene Massigli scrutinized France’s foreign policy from London for more than ten years.  His career’s completion came around 1955 when the Council President and Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Pierre Mendes France, named him General Secretary of Foreign Affairs.

CARRUGHJELLU  SANTA CROCE

Referring to the Santa Croce chapel, headquarters of the brotherhood of the same name, this side street takes you there directly.  In fact, the members of the brotherhood A Santa Croce would gather in this old church; their statutes have been found.  The first 21 chapters were read and approved by the Bishop of Nebbio, Giacomo Ruscone on October 22, 1607, which proves how old this brotherhood is.
