DECLARING A DEATH
Declaring a death must be carried out in the City Hall where the death took place. It is mandatory and must be done within 24 hours after the death was pronounced (not including weekends and holidays). The civil registrar must register the death even if the delay has expired.
A doctor will declare the death and establish a medical death certificate.
A death can be declared by a relative or any other person having the most complete information concerning the deceased’s civil status.
In general, the funeral homes take care of all these steps.
NECESSARY DOCUMENTS
The person declaring a death must go to City Hall with: a form of identification, a medical certificate from a doctor stating the death, any document which would help identify the civil status of the deceased (family record book, birth certificate, ID card of the deceased…)
After declaring a death, City Hall will establish a death certificate.
