Louis Leccia de Campori, a descendant from the family of the same name who came to Oletta at the end of the 14th century was France’s vice-consul in Puerto Rico at the beginning of the 20th century

 

CARRUGHJU PAUL GUIDI

(January 9, 1911, Oletta – September 19, 1996, Paris)

This student of Paul Peretti in Oletta had a brilliant career in diplomacy.  One after the other he was the Civil Services Administrator in Indochina, principal private secretary of France’s High Commissioner in Indochina, Head Administrator of French Overseas Territories, Foreign Affairs Councilor, Director of African Affairs, Director of African Affairs and Madagascans, then Minister Plenipotentiary.

In Indochina, his most remarkable feat of arms was to blow up the Mekong bridges with a torpedo boat to delay the Japanese advance. Taken prisoner by the Japanese, the order had been given to cut off his head but a poor transmission saved his life. Paul Guidi was also General Councilor of Conca d’Orude from 1951 to 1964 (Rad).

CARRUGHJU GENERALE OLETTA 

In 1736 General Oletta defeated all of the Nebbiu region and took the weapons away from the inhabitants of Barbaghju and Patrimoniu, weapons Genoa had given them to fight King Theodore, and managed, with Arrighi, to push back the Swiss and the Genoese who had come to help them.

 

STRETTA DOMINIQUE GHIRLANDA 

(14.09.1893, Oletta – 19.08.1914 Algolshein (Upper-Alsace)

Dominique Ghirlanda was the first soldier of the village to be killed at the battle front during the World War I.  A soldier of the 163rd regiment of Infantry, Dominique Ghirlanda died for France. He therefore represents all of the people from Oletta who died for France during WWI.  It is also the occasion to honor the Ghirlanda family who gave many soldiers to France, especially:  Jacques François 1880 – 1962; Ange Marie 1884 – 1967; François born in 1936, all three Chevaliers of the Legion of Honor.
